Hummer Tour Moab views

Tours don’t come much more white-knuckle-inducing than this Hummer tour Moab has to offer. Take a drive over the sandstone rocks around the outdoor capital of Utah. The views are incredible, the tour is exhilarating and it’ll be one of the most unique things you do in this unbelievably awe-inspiring area of the United States.

What is a Hummer tour?

A Hummer is a 4×4 off-roading vehicle with such high clearance that it can drive up and over rocks and other such obstacles. That means it can go where no regular car would be able to go.

Around Moab Utah there are a number of off-road adventure areas that a Hummer or similar vehicle can explore. You get to see an area that you wouldn’t be able to take your own car to.

And as you climb and descend these huge rocks and boulders you’ll be jostled around in a way you didn’t think was possible.

But don’t worry, the drivers are very experienced and even though you’ll want to bite your nails or scream, I guarantee this is one of the most fun things to do in Moab.

Who are the Moab Adventure Center?

Moab Adventure Center UT

The Moab Adventure Center specialize in outdoor adventures and tours. Whether it be a small group bus tour of the national parks with one of their experienced guides; or a river rafting trip you’ll never forget.

Their Hummer tours are a more thrill seeking way to discover the fantastic back country – while still letting someone else drive. As someone who had never done this before, I was happy to have someone else take me.

Just a day earlier I’d taken a tour of Arches National Park with MAC. However I was determined to see what all the fuss was about with these epic Hummer tours I’d heard so much about.

Where does the Hummer Tour Moab go?

Taking a hummer tour, Moab UT

There are a couple of different Hummer tours offered by the Moab Adventure Center. The one I took was the Slickrock Safari Hummer Adventure, a 2-hour tour. It goes to an area called “Hell’s Revenge”, which as ominous as that sounds, was a magical place to go.

The tour starts just outside of the town of Moab and ends with a stunning overlook of the Colorado River. Arches National Park can also be seen in the background on this thrilling adventure.

The other tour offered is the Moab Hummer Grand Safari, a 4-hour tour. This goes a further couple of miles and to places you wouldn’t be able to reach on the shorter tour.

The last option is the 3-hour Sunset Safari Hummer Tour which, as the name suggests, is later in the day to catch a breathtaking sunset. This tour goes to the same area of Hell’s Revenge but is slightly longer than the Slickrock Safari tour.

Who can take a Hummer tour?

The minimum age for taking the tour is 3 years old. There is no maximum. On the tour I took were two ladies who were easily in their seventies, one of whom had mobility issues and used a cane. Nothing fazed them and they had the best time on this tour.

Since you are in the vehicle most of the time there is very minimal walking involved. If you have mobility issues talk to the driver and they will sit you up front where it might be easier for you to get in the vehicle.

Since the vehicle is climbing over rocks, it’s a bit of a rough ride. If you have back issues you might want to give it a miss, but otherwise it’s a fun tour for everyone.

Please note, as with most tours and outdoor adventures, you will need to sign a waiver to take part in this tour.

How much is a Hummer tour?

The tour I took, the Slickrock Safari Hummer Adventure, is around $100 USD for adults, and about $80 for those 12 years and under. The Grand Safari, being double the length is about double the price.

There are no additional fees included other than taxes. The only other cost would be if you wanted to give a tip to your driver. With the driving they have to do and the excellent explanations as you go, this isn’t difficult to justify.

There are other companies who also have tours of similar pricing. The main thing to watch out for is if you’re booking a tour where you are driven, or one where you are driving the vehicle yourself and following the tour guide. Best to make sure you pay attention to that since not everyone has the comfort level to drive themselves.

Hummer Tour Moab – The Vehicle

The vehicles have 9 seats – one front seat passenger, four behind the driver in the vehicle, and 4 seats raised up at the rear outside of the vehicle.

On the tour I took there were four of us plus the driver. One guest had mobility issues and took the front passenger seat. Her friend sat behind her in the main vehicle. My friend and I decided to live life on the edge – the back edge of the hummer that is.

Strong metal support framework is in place for your protection, and there’s a cover over the vehicle to protect from dust, sun etc. To get into the back four seats you’ll need to climb up using the back wheel – but I reckon they’re the best seats.

The Hummer the Moab Adventure Center uses is basically the civilian version of the same military vehicle. So you know it’s a hardcore piece of equipment.

37 inch tires give over 16 inches of clearance so this Hummer will be able to get over some of the biggest rocks around. Plus since it can take on a 60 degree slope, you’ll be up and down some majorly steep climbs.

Hummer Tour Moab – The Driver

off-road adventure Utah

I cannot say enough good things about Craig, our driver on the tour. Having grown up in the area and doing off roading starting when he was a kid, Craig has 20 years of experience. You’ll find the same with most of the drivers there – they know their stuff.

Even if Craig did make us hesitate 5-minutes into our tour when he proudly exclaimed he thought he was doing well for his first day. Just what you want to hear mid hair-raising climb in a shaky vehicle. Luckily he was only joking.

The drivers are not only skilled at navigating this ridiculous landscape in the monster vehicles, but are a wealth of information.

From local history to geology, Craig was a fountain of knowledge. You’ll probably learn a thing or two while having the time of your life on this tour.

The Hummer Tour Moab Experience

Utah back country landscape

The Slickrock Safari Hummer Tour Moab leaves from the Moab Adventure Center in downtown Moab. It’s a short 5 minute drive to the start of the trail you will take. The trail’s name? “Hell’s Revenge”. Definitely nothing to worry about though, everything’s fine!

After the initial climb, the ominously nicknamed “Devil’s backbone”, my heart rate started to get back to normal just to see a couple who rented their own UTV sitting by the side of their upturned vehicle. After learning what not to do (turning too quickly while basically mounting rock stairs), we continued with our own tour.

what not to do in a UTV

Our guide/driver Craig told us all about the rocks that we were traveling through. The Navajo sandstone in this area is over 200 million years old. That’s pretty freaking old! We had just enough time to absorb this information before we set off down “rollercoaster hill” which is just as invigorating as it sounds.

Craig then flexed his driving skills as he lifted a wheel and we balanced on the remaining three. I don’t know if I’ve ever felt so panicked while simultaneously having the best time ever.

In search of good views

Colorado River panorama

After 20-minutes of climbing up and down big rocks and generally being thrown around like a ragdoll, we landed in the flat desert. From here, taking sandy corners at speed and rushing through deep waterlogged paths was enough to ensure we were not getting too bored – unlikely!

We turned the opposite direction at a hope-inducing sign that pointed to the easier route. Soon after we reached our half way point – the Colorado River overlook. A chance to stretch our legs, eat some thoughtfully provided snacks, and of course take a picture that didn’t have a blur to it from movement. But first – getting out of the vehicle and making sure my legs still worked.

A short walk closer to the overlook point provided ever-better views of the valley below. Craig played photographer very well and even took the best panoramic photo for me. I think I’m going to have to hire him for all my travel adventures.

The break was about 10 minutes or so, and then we were back off in the same direction. Along the way Craig filled us in on some history of the area as well as more about the geology of this incredibly unique and interesting region.

In search of dinosaurs

Despite returning over much of the same trail as we’d already traversed, it was still exciting to be coming at it the opposite way. The ride was no less thrilling, and no less impactful on the heart rate.

My ears perked back up as our driver mentioned that given that these rocks had been here for millions of years, dinosaurs had once roamed the area. As someone who has been obsessed with dinosaurs since she was 4-years old I was excited. In fact, I once visited Kualoa Ranch in Hawaii because it was where Jurassic Park was filmed – my favorite movie.

We pulled alongside a couple of signs and a dramatically scenic viewpoint where we were to find some real dino tracks. Our driver’s resume was growing – from expert driver to historian and botanist, and geologist to now paleontologist. The first big track we had pointed out to us was that of an allosaurus. The Jurassic cousin to the Cretaceous T-Rex, this guy was big.

There were also tracks of a smaller raptor-like dinosaur as well as a triceratops. This was an epic end to the most incredible journey around impressive Moab. From here we skirted the Devil’s Backbone to exit the park and return to the Moab Adventure Center.

How worth it is this Hummer tour?

Exploring amazing Utah by hummer tour

It’s not even a question of is this tour worth it – it’s how much is it worth it! If you’ve been on the fence about whether this Hummer tour Moab offers is worth the money and time, don’t be. Hop on over that fence and climb onboard the best way to get around the Moab desert.

My day would have been made by being able to stand in the footprints of a dinosaur. But to take possibly the most unique and coolest form of transport to get there was the icing on top of the sweetest cake.

There might be brief moments of complete terror as you look at an incline and turn to your friend in disbelief before the Hummer surges on. And there might be times where you scream with a blurry mix of panic and delight. But this Hummer tour Moab is 100% worth doing, and the Moab Adventure Center is the perfect place to start.

  2. This sounds equally terrifying and fun haha. A tour where someone else drives sounds perfect–I don’t think I’d have the guts to do it myself. I can’t believe there were real dinosaur tracks! It sounds like you really enjoyed this adventure 🙂

  4. Omg the hummer tour looks like the perfect way to not only see Moab, but experience it! I definitely wouldn’t drive though in case I broke the car. I’d be way too anxious. I think I’d sit in the back like you and take it all in! Definitely saving this for when we get to the west coast.

  6. A Hummer tour? Not heard of it but YES YES YES to this. Now we’re talking 😛

Love that your driver Craig was completely engaged and did a few tricks with the car for show off and to enhance the fun. Those tour guides who do a little extra to make sure guests having a good time make the experience even more memorable. I would certainly love to do a Humming Tour if I ever make it to Utah.

  9. I’m glad to see and hear you had a wonderful time doing this! I did a similar off-roading jeep tour in Sedona, so I know how rough and exhilarating it is to climb over rocks and off-road in general. But, I’d love to go back to Moab and do this for myself!
