Hawaii is on a lot of people’s bucket lists. But should it be? I spent a couple of weeks in Hawaii in 2019 with time on Oahu and the Big Island. So today I thought I’d address some things I discovered on my trip to Hawaii that might make you think about planning a trip there. After all, it’s good to have all the facts before you make a decision on a trip right? So here it is, my top reasons why you shouldn’t go to Hawaii.
It’s too sunny in Hawaii
Like anyone needs that much sun? Sure we get it, Hawaii is warm and you can stay outside all the time. Bars and restaurants don’t need all their walls and every day is a good day to be on the beach. I mean how annoying must it be to always need your sunglasses and not need to permanently carry an umbrella? To give you an idea, Honolulu receives on average 271 days of sun per year. New York gets 221, and even Orlando only gets 233. The US national average is 205. Wait, what? Vitamin D is good for you? Hmm, OK well we can let them have this one.
The beaches are too beautiful
Crystal clean waters and white sand beaches. Ugh, it’s all too much. Who needs beaches to look that beautiful, am I right? That’s right, the sunny state of Hawaii is no surprise also about the beaches. No matter which island you’re on you’re never really more than an hour away from a beautiful beach, sometimes less. How do you get any work done? When we were in Hawaii we found so many spectacular beaches we just had to give in and sit down with a book, walk along the water, and even found turtles trying to swim ashore.
Hawaii is too relaxing
All those beaches are just too nice not to spend time at, but then imagine how relaxed you’re going to feel in Hawaii. No one seems to be rushing around in Hawaii. There’s no urgency to get anywhere, people are very laid back. And as a tourist there are an absolute ton of relaxing resorts. Can you believe that? So I’m supposed to just sit back, relax and have someone bring me drinks on a beach or by a pool? People actually like that? OK, I guess it’s worth a try. Maybe just the one cocktail. If you do head to the Big Island then I fully recommend the Fairmont Orchid Resort.

The people are too nice
Everyone greets you warmly, smiles all the time and is generally really happy. The sun is shining, the beaches are nice and…alright I think I’ve found the reason why everyone is generally a little nicer. A little more positive. The people are so nice and friendly that I start to question it. Where are the people angrily complaining about the weather? Oh! But, what about the people who are rushing around through the busy city? Oh! So you’re telling me people in Hawaii are just nice because they are happy? I guess that’s fair.
The food of Hawaii is too good
The freshest fish, the juiciest tropical fruits, Hawaii has its fair share of delicious foods but is it really that good? Hands up if you care about freshly sliced pineapple? Oh, you do?! But what about locally caught fish served the same day it’s caught? Well, I admit that does sound pretty sustainable! No, you can’t tell me that you would enjoy a juicy, sweet papaya every morning for breakfast served with a squeeze of lime juice. That sounds so…delicious! It sounds delicious! Hawaiian food was light, refreshing and colorful, what’s not to like?

There are too many things to do
Beach, sun, beach, sun, beach. That’s it? Is there anything else to do in Hawaii? Well I guess there’s surfing, that’s pretty huge. In the way that Hawaii is the surfing capital of the world huge. Snorkeling, wind surfing, scuba diving, basically anything to do with being on, in or under the water is popular in Hawaii. Check out this introductory surfing class from Viator.
The Big Island doesn’t have as sandy beaches though so there’s probably not much to do there, right? Well, they have all of the same water sports, and a whole lot of volcanic rock. Which means you can visit Hawaii Volcanoes National Park for a geologically awesome day out. Then there’s the plantations and factories for some of Hawaii’s most famous products. Visit the Dole Plantation for your pineapple fix, visit the Mauna Lao macadamia nut farm, and take a farm to bar chocolate tour in Hilo. Hmm, so that might keep you busy for a little bit of your vacation after all.

You’ll want to go back again and again
The worst part about visiting Hawaii is that after you spend one vacation there, you’ll just want to keep going back again and again. Sun, beaches, good food, fun activities, outdoors, friendly people and relaxation. That’ll ruin you for everywhere else you want to go. That sounds awful right? You should probably stay away and keep your expectations where they are! I tell you what, you go somewhere else and I’ll take all the Hawaii trips for everyone. That’s my gift to you. I’ll take one for the team.
Why you shouldn’t go to Hawaii
So, if you haven’t guessed it by now, this was a tongue in cheek post about Hawaii. Of course, Hawaii is awesome. I loved my time there and was basically planning my next trip before the wheels of my plane were even down back in Vancouver. What’s not to love about Hawaii? It’s a great place.
And while you may have heard it’s expensive, or thought that it was too far to get too, that’s not all true. We managed to book a trip to Hawaii on a seat sale and got round trip tickets to Honolulu for $400 CAD. And it was a direct flight, only 6 hours. It would take me that long to get to the East coast of the United States, or to Mexico. Sure, I live on the West Coast so it might be a little closer to me, but there are great options for cheap and easy flights. Check out cheap car rentals with Auto Europe for getting around the islands.
Food might be a little more expensive in Hawaii for some things. But if you’re eating fresh foods, locally sourced food, then that might help with your budget. There are also a lot of Happy Hour deals we found, and we found the Big Island a little cheaper for food. Read more about my experiences of food on Oahu. The point is, Hawaii is amazing, don’t miss out on it!

I agree with all of these! No one should go to Hawaii, it’s way too fun and no one else would like it other than me.
Deary me, what a difficult time you had. All that sun, beautiful beaches, amazing food and time to relax. π
As a fellow Vancouverite, I am soooo excited to find out you can make it to Hawaii so cheaply! You must be ready to go back now we have all this rain!
Haha! Love your post! Iβve visited Hawaii in December and itβs amazing!
Absolutely adored this tongue in cheek post! I’ll be taking it OFF my bucket list right away! (wink wink)
Great post! I’m heading to Hawaii in March and I hope this post scares everyone away so I have it all to myself π
I could quite easily cope with fresh papaya every morning with a squeeze of fresh lime juice…oh and those beaches! π
Nice info! And you’re right, one trip to Hawaii will.just result in wanting more!
Hilarious and excellent points ! Certainly are compelling reasons. π€£
You are absolutely right on all counts here. You have just saved me thousands–and some major disappointment (not)! LOL
I see what you did here! π I just got back from Hawaii and canβt wait to get back. It really never gets old!
I LOVED my visit to the Big Island in October. I want to go back to Hawaii ASAP!
Haha I love this! Too many frigging beaches, and so many boring beautiful views! Who on earth would eat at a food truck? OUTSIDE?! π
Hawaii has been on my list for a while but you’ve convinced me to reconsider! I think I might solely have to go just so I can retell a first-hand tale to deter other people from visiting. I do appreciate the advice though!
It’s only right to experience first hand then dissuade others. I mean, it’s for their own good right? π
