I don’t know about you, but right about now I’m really looking forward to hunkering down in a cozy little winter hideaway in the middle of nowhere. Spending time in the big city is a wonderful way to spend a winter vacation, with all the beautiful lights and festive activities. But sometimes you just want to get away from it all and relax in front of a roaring fire. With a book and a blanket, sipping on a hot chocolate, there isn’t much that can beat that warm winter feeling. Last year I found a spectacular winter cabin getaway in Sechelt BC, near Vancouver. So this year I am already looking for some more cozy winter cabins. If you are too, then start with these recommendations from other travel bloggers. It’s time to truly soak up that winter wonderland feeling.
What do I look for in a winter getaway?
For me, winter is one of those times I can really embrace my introverted tendencies. It’s not just accepted to hide away in the comfort of your home for months on end, it’s actually expected. The time for making the most of the nice weather is long passed. Which means I don’t have to feel bad about spending some quality quiet time. That’s why for my winter getaways I don’t need the bustle of a big city or tons of activities to keep me happy. I’m equally happy with cozy winter cabins in the middle of nowhere.
Alone or with close friends, a quiet cabin means I don’t have to make big plans on my trip. There are people I know I don’t have to worry about offending when I say I want to read my book, and don’t have to talk to every minute of our trip together. I look forward to accommodation with less people around. Not a busy hotel, but a secluded cabin or resort. I also love having access to nature, somewhere to go for a lovely winter walk on some crunchy fresh snow. Then retreat somewhere warm and let the dark, early nights shut me out from the world again. Sounds good, doesn’t it?

Brocante Chalet – Glacier, Washington
Living in Canada my friends and I wanted somewhere not too far over the border for a quick weekend getaway. Mount Baker is a huge mountain that can be seen even from Vancouver. It’s always covered in snow, even in the summer, and looks so close you could almost touch it. So when we wanted a cozy cabin getaway Mount Baker seemed like the obvious choice.
Looking around the Glacier area for the perfect accommodation we discovered Brocante Chalet. This large property is part of Mount Baker Vacation Rentals and was big enough for our group which included three couples and one child. The cabin has 3 bedrooms but still felt like any of those cozy winter cabins you see nestled in the woods. The road to the cabin is very quiet, just further on from the tiny town of Maple Falls. With a huge kitchen and comfortable sitting area we had plenty of room to move around. The best part was that Brocante Chalet has a hot tub on a deck out back that looks out into the quiet wooded forest areas. Perfect for those colder winter evenings.
There are a couple of nice little pubs close by and driving distance to Mount Baker which is a great day out any time of year. In the summer there are lovely trails with incredible views. And in winter the views are just a little more covered in snow, with winter activities such as skiing available. I would love to go back to this place and spend another weekend. For less than $200 a night you can’t beat the price when sharing the cost with friends or family.
A Taste of Alaska Lodge – Fairbanks, Alaska
By Sarah from She Travels – Follow Sarah on Instagram
A Taste of Alaska Lodge is exactly what you think of when you want a cozy winter getaway. This bed and breakfast is nestled in Alaska’s beautiful country right outside Fairbanks’ downtown. You might not think of visiting Alaska in the winter because it’s very cold. But with the right gear and a cozy place to sleep, I think the winter is the best time explore this area.
When you visit A Taste of Alaska Lodge, make sure you rent a car from the Fairbanks Airport, a 20-25 minute drive. It makes it easier to get around to the different sights in the area.
Even though it’s only a short distance from downtown, the lodge is located far enough away from light pollution. Which means it’s the perfect spot to view the Northern Lights in the Winter. They even have a warming yurt outside in case you’re waiting for quite a while. Their customer service is so impressive that they’ll even send you a text when the Northern Lights come out so you can run outside and see them!
Aside from viewing Aurora Borealis, there are a ton of other winter activities to do around the area. Dog sledding, snow shoeing, and more. It’s even fun to sit in their dining area, enjoy a coffee from their coffee cart, and look out at the view from their huge window. This is also the spot where you can enjoy their delicious breakfast or dinner upon request!
The views in Fairbanks this time of year are seriously unmatched! The roads, lined with snow covered pine trees, make you feel like you’re in the middle of a winter wonderland!
Tuscarora Lodge and Canoe Outfitters – Grand Marais Minnesota
By Ada from Beyond The Yellow Brick Road – Follow Ada on Instagram
Discover the meaning of “hygge” in lakeside Cabin 3 at Tuscarora Lodge and Canoe Outfitters, a Gunflint Trail resort in northeastern Minnesota. The Gunflint Trail is a two-lane highway running 57 miles between two sections of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. Two dozen resorts and a handful of restaurants dot this wilderness road, a regional favorite among winter enthusiasts. Popular with those making the five-hour drive from the Twin Cities, enjoy exceptional cross-country skiing, ice fishing, and other winter activities.
You’ll want to come well-prepared for your visit to this remote cabin. The nearest town – Grand Marais – is 47 miles away on the North Shore of Lake Superior. But the cabin’s fully-equipped kitchen makes preparing meals during your visit easy. Adventure seekers can ski or snowshoe into the winter wonderland of the Boundary Waters right from the cabin’s doorstep. Those who prefer “the great indoors” can curl up with glass of wine or cup of hot cocoa on one of the comfy living room chairs. Enjoy the view of snow-flocked trees overlooking frozen Round Lake. A wood stove (firewood is provided for cabin guests) in the main living area and wood paneling throughout the cabin lend an especially cozy feel to this pet-friendly, two-bedroom rental.
Although Cabin 3 is one of three winterized cabins available at Tuscarora, the resort rents these cabins as Airbnbs during the winter. As the only property on the lake, you’ll truly feel like you have the entire Northwoods to yourself. Winter wildlife sightings are commonplace so keep your eyes peeled. If you head out on the nearby network of groomed ski trails or take a snowshoe hike you just might spy a moose!
Appalachian Mountain Club Wilderness Lodges and Cabins – Maine
By Karen from Outdoor Adventure Sampler – Follow Karen on Facebook
After an exhilarating day of cross country skiing, there’s nothing better than warming up in one of these cozy winter cabins. It’s especially true when there is a lodge nearby serving all your meals family-style at big tables with other winter enthusiasts. The Appalachian Mountain Club has several log cabin clusters in the remote 100 Mile Wilderness area of Maine for skiing out the front door adventures.
Gorham Chairback Lodge and Cabins is located on Long Pond 20 miles east of Greenville, Maine. However, in the winter, the cabins are accessible only by ski, snowshoe, fat bike, or dogsled. Snowmobiles transport your gear to make for a pleasant journey along the groomed ski trails. Little Lyford Lodge and Cabins is located 6.5 miles by trail from Gorham Chairback. A lodge-to-lodge skiing trip puts you in the heart of off-the-grid Maine wilderness.
The individual log cabins surrounding the lodges are steeped in historic character. Artifacts of Maine lumbering life grace the walls. Each cabin has a wood stove to keep you toasty and charming gas lamps for light. Comfy beds and bunks for up to 5 people mean you can bring the family. Head to the lodge for yummy homemade meals. After breakfast, fixings for packed lunches to take on the trail are put out. A huge fireplace in the lodge is an evening gathering spot for reading, games, or socializing. There’s even a traditional sauna to soothe your sore muscles after a day on the trails.
All in all, the AMC wilderness lodges with log cabins for sleeping are a bucket list-worthy way to comfortably experience one of the most isolated winter wilderness areas in the United States.
Carolina Cottage Guest House – Saluda, North Carolina
By Terri from FemaleSoloTrek – Follow Terri on Instagram
The perfect place to cuddle in a cabin and explore the great outdoors is western North Carolina. You could spend your whole week just driving and hiking along the Blue Ridge Parkway. One of the many Airbnb rentals in the BRP area is this romantic, cozy cabin nestled deep in the woods near Saluda, NC.
In the Blue ridge Mountains I was completely alone in the woods yet within an hour of Asheville, an amazing city of artists and breweries. Another must see is the Biltmore Estate. A French Renaissance chateau built by George Washington Vanderbilt II. Known famously as “America’s Largest Home®,” it spans 135,280 square feet. The beautiful Biltmore Gardens were designed by Frederick Law Olmstead, considered the father of American landscaping.
If you want to self-isolate, stay in your car and drive the BRP. There are four separate regions each with unique attributes. Ridge (mile 0-106); Plateau (mile 106-217); Highlands (mile 217-340); and Pisgah (mile 340-469). the 469 mile long BRP takes a minimum of 11 hours to drive non-stop. But the reality is that you want to stop at every overlook because the Blue Ridge mountain vistas drag you out of your car seat like a giant magnet. These mountain passes have been traveled since pioneers from Scotland, England and Ireland began immigrating to North Carolina in the late 1700s.
So while you visit the Blue Ridge Mountains, make sure to stay long enough to enjoy it even more. And the Carolina Cottage is the best way to do that. The highlight of this beautiful cabin for me was the outdoor patio and fire pit, perfect for those cold winter days.
Log Cabin near Cherry Springs State Park – Galeton Pennsylvania
By Pamela from Directionally Challenged – Follow Pamela on Instagram
A remote cabin nestled in the woods, surrounded by nature is an ideal getaway. This particular cabin is located within 10 minutes of Cherry Springs Dark Sky Park. Cherry Springs is the darkest park in America east the Mississippi. Located in north-central Pennsylvania, you can see the Milky Way with the naked eye throughout most of the year.
The cabin is a furnished one bedroom with all the necessary amenities. Well, except wifi and cable – so bring your DVD’s! Or a good book. It even has a picnic bench and fire pit outside. For only $25, you can also bring your dog with you. Our dog gets excited around people, but the cabin was very remote that he was able to be off-leash without worry! We enjoyed a few hikes around the cabin during the day and the breathtaking stargazing that the park had to offer.
The Milky Way can be spotted throughout the year at Cherry Springs but be sure to visit on a New Moon or when the moon is low in the horizon. The cabin comes with air conditioning and heating so you don’t have to worry about extreme temperatures. On a clear night, you can even see stars right above the cabin, a magical sight.
Cozy winter cabins to visit this year
The USA is full of adorable, cozy winter cabins that are just begging you to book them. So grab your significant other or a couple of close friends and plan your next winter weekend getaway. Nestled in the mountains, or hidden in the woods, they are all just perfect for a quiet home away from home. Light the fire, bring some games or a book and switch off for a weekend. You’ll get back feeling refreshed and recharged and just itching to book another. Prepare for the cold weather outside while curling up warmly inside. Enjoy the winter activities each of these places has to offer, then cozy up to a roaring fire when you get back. For a year when we might not get to spend too much time with big family get togethers, this might be the ideal escape for you this Christmas or New Year.

The Appalachian Mountain Club cabin looks so cute! Love the idea of a little wood burning stove and keeping all cozy! I would also love to visit Alaska and stay in the Fairbanks cabin. And I’m so with you on the company – people who won’t be offended when I rather read is the ideal group!

All of these cabins looks lovely, but the Appalachian Mountain Club is where I’d most want to stay. Looks gorgeous!
