Australia is the land of kangaroos, the Opera House and a laid back relaxed lifestyle. It is also a country full of solo female travelers, whether you are in one of the state capitals, such as Sydney or Melbourne, or along the coast of Western Australia from Perth to Broome.

Australia is safe, welcoming, extremely well-traveled, and everyone speaks English. They welcome female solo travelers with open arms because compared to some other countries – it is easy to travel around.

As a woman, you can travel freely and safely on public transport or in your vehicle, and if you have any trouble, there are friendly locals to help you out. They will offer you advice and want you to love their beautiful country.

There are hostels all over the country, perfect for solo travelers, and they put on events and ‘welcome drinks’ for their guests. Some good options are Flinders Backpackers in Melbourne and Aquarius Backpackers in Byron Bay.

There are plenty of opportunities to meet other solo travelers not just in hostels. Group tours on Fraser Island and sailing on the Whitsundays are perfect to meet others with similar interests. Azerbaijan is not only one of the safest countries to visit for solo female travelers; it’s also one of the most underrated dream places to visit. The crime rate is generally very low in this country, and you’ll feel safe the second you step foot into the capital of Baku. In fact, one of the first things you’ll notice about Azerbaijan is how welcoming and friendly the locals are. Pickpockets are also quite rare, although it’s always a good idea to take precautions either way.

Not only is the vibe and atmosphere in Azerbaijan very safe and friendly, it’s also very easy to meet other travelers during your time there, especially if you stay in hostels. One of the best hostels in the whole country is Sahil Hostel & Hotel, which is very cozy, budget-friendly, and perfectly located in the city center of Baku.

From Baku, you can also book a day tour to Gobustan National Park, which is a must-visit on any trip to Azerbaijan. The agency Bag Baku offers one of the best deals for this day trip, and it’s also a great way to meet other travelers and make new friends.

There are also tons of unique mountain villages and ancient towns to visit in this country, including Quba, Xinaliq, Gabala, and Sheki. A great way to explore the country is to start in Baku and to take buses to reach these other points of attraction.

Belgium may not be the first country you will think about when looking for your next holiday destination. Often travelers opt for the more well known European countries like Italy or Spain. A true pity, because Belgium has so many beautiful places to visit.

Belgium is one of the safest countries to visit for women who travel solo. Crime rates are low and it is unlikely that anything will happen to you. However just like everywhere else in the world you need to be vigilant for pickpockets.

Belgium’s largest cities, Brussels, Antwerp, Dinant, Ghent and Brussels, are places that should be on your Belgian bucket list. You’ll find historic architecture, narrow streets, beautiful souvenir shops and tasty restaurants everywhere you go. Are you more a nature lover? Make sure to visit the Belgian Ardennes to go hiking!

Don’t forget to taste some Belgian beer, waffles and chocolate when you visit the country. Yust Antwerp, is the perfect place to stay when in the country, as it offers trendy rooms for any budget!

There’s not much you can do wrong by solo traveling in Canada. This country is known worldwide for the friendliness of its people and this is definitely no lie! Canadians in general are always eager to help if they see you’re lost or are traveling solo. They don’t mind at all starting the conversation, telling you all about their wonderful country, or trying to convince you to visit their hometown first!

Traveling solo to one of Canada’s renowned cities such as Toronto, Montreal or Quebec is definitely going to be on your bucket list. These cities can easily be reached by train and when you’re booking a room in a hostel or renting a room in the house of an Airbnb host you definitely won’t feel lonely here!

Standing on top of the CN Tower in Toronto will be an incredibly powerful moment, strolling around Quebec City’s German Christmas market will brighten up your day, and having dinner with your Airbnb host will make you feel right at home.

Would you rather visit some of Canada’s natural reserves? Make some friends and rent a car together, this will be the most affordable option, guaranteeing you a lot of fun along the way!

China

Longsheng Longji rice terraces, China - one of the safest countries to visit

This one may surprise you but China is actually one of the safest countries to visit in the world. With very little crime other than petty theft that you might get in any tourist destination, China makes a great travel option. The Chinese people are friendly and welcoming, if not a little curious of foreigners, and hold family values very highly.

China is a huge country but there’s plenty to see, even on a short China transit visa. To get around more easily stick to domestic flights or high speed trains. Sleeper trains are a good budget option but are often delayed and quite basic. Hostels in China are some of the best places to stay, often nicer than some hotels. Mix Hostel in Chengdu is possibly the best hostel I’ve stayed at. They had social nights including dumpling making parties and a great restaurant and outdoor courtyard area.

Beijing, for being one of the world’s biggest cities, is easy to get around by metro train and a wonderful place to explore. For some unique experiences head to Yangshuo or the Longshen Longji rice terraces. Wherever you go in China you will meet amazing people who will welcome you and are always keen to practice their English skills.

Croatia

An absolutely recommended safe solo travel destination for women is Croatia. This beautiful Balkan country enchants not only with the beautiful landscapes and the breathtaking beaches in Croatia, but also the people are incredibly warm, hospitable and always extremely helpful. Whether you stay in a hostel, a privately run apartment or a hotel – your well-being is the top priority here.

A stroll through the historic old towns, shopping at the local markets or a cozy coffee in one of the many cool cafe bars. All absolutely safe in Croatia and also for solo female travelers no problem at all. Lewd looks or macho come-ons are rarely the order of the day here. Pickpocketing or typical vacation scams also hardly ever occur in Croatia.

Those women who like to travel on a budget will find inexpensive and safe hostels in the larger tourist centers. You can find like-minded people with whom you can go on excursions or meet for a cocktail.

Croatia is one of the safest countries to visit, especially for women – the coastline is unique, crime is negligible, and the people are very friendly.

Czech Republic

The Czech Republic is a land of history, castles and chateaus, and ancient cities. But also a land of folklore, great beer, and delicious wine. You can find 14 UNESCO sites in the Czech Republic!

The Czech Republic is a perfect destination for solo female travelers as it ranks among the TOP 10 safest countries to visit in the world. Public transportation is also easily accessible, cheap, and takes you nearly anywhere you want.

Czech Republic hostels are cheap and often offer programs like pub crawls, especially in bigger cities like Prague or Brno. Prague has the second-highest density of bars and clubs in the world! I guess the main reason is the world-famous Czech beer which isn’t just great, but also very cheap. Less than 2 Euros for half a liter of draft beer!

Nature and outdoor lovers shouldn’t miss national parks and protected areas with mystical sandstone pillars, which created very unique rock cities like Adršpach or Prachovské skály. To experience Czech folklore and traditions, visit South Moravia – the land of wine and folk music. So don’t wait and find the best places to visit in the Czech Republic.

If you are looking for a cool place where to stay in Prague, check out Charles Bridge Hostel.

Finland

Finland - one of the safest countries to visit in the world

With a population of less than 6 million making up the country, which has been named the happiest place in the world for multiple years, Finland is also known as one of the safest countries to visit. If you’re a solo female traveler, Finland is a great option. Its capital, Helsinki, is also one of the safest capital cities.

The Finnish are friendly and welcoming and you won’t feel any concern walking around the streets alone. Even in winter when the days are short, the small-town feel of even the bigger cities will warm your heart.

Start with a couple of days exploring Helsinki, taking in the sights such as the beautiful cathedrals, Suomenlinna fortress and a museum or two. Head up north to Lapland where it’s basically Christmas all year long, and chances of seeing the Northern Lights are abundant.

Finland, like neighboring Scandinavian countries Sweden and Norway, is not particularly cheap. But there are budget hostels and hotels, such as the Hotel Arthur in Helsinki, and local markets for cheap eats. Extend your solo travel journey to another safe country, Estonia, just a 2 hour ferry ride away from Helsinki.

Georgia

Because of its geographic location and recent political upheavals, many people assume that Georgia is an unsafe place to visit. In reality, nothing is further from the truth. It’s ideal for solo female travelers with the same level of caution you’d exercise anywhere else. Plus Georgia is extremely budget-friendly destination.

Tbilisi, Georgia’s capital, is consistently named among the top 10 safest cities in the world. Petty crime is almost non-existent and tourists are very rarely the target of any crime at all. Tourist scams are few and far between compared to other European cities and thanks to major police reform, corruption is mostly a thing of the past.

One of the best tips for staying safe in Georgia is to avoid being on the roads after dark as dangerous driving is one of the biggest concerns so have a travel buddy if you’re visiting rural villages or hiking in remote areas. At the very least have your accommodation organized in advance.

There are great things to do for every interest – from hiking in Svaneti to wine tasting in Kakheti. Georgia is world-famous for its hospitality. From city to village, travelers are welcomed with open arms.

Guesthouses are particularly great for solo travelers and an easy way to interact with a local family. It’s not uncommon for your host to invite you over for dinner, offer to drive you around for the day, or even ask you out to their family vineyard.

Germany

Germany is a country that female solo travelers should have high expectations of an ease free, low stress trip. One of the safest countries to visit for solo travel.

In fact, in some places in Germany, like Bavaria, people often joke that it feels more like what the US did in the 1950s.  Doors can be left unlocked without fear of break-ins, kids as young as 5 are seen walking to and from school completely on their own, and life is just generally safe.

Traveling solo as a woman in Germany is also extremely easy. The trains and public transportation are so reliable, on time, and efficient, but also rarely come with incidents and issues.

The biggest times for a female to be on high alert would be at the same time any traveler should be aware of their surrounding, like when on a crowded public bus.  In these cases, one of the biggest threats are things like pick pockets or scams, not violent or bodily threatening occurrences. Even bigger cities, like spending 3 days in Munich, are safe to enjoy your time in.

Japan

Japan is the perfect solo travel destination for women. Safety is a prominent concern of women travelling alone, and Japan is one of the safest countries to visit for solo travelers. As evidenced by its a very low crime rate, this a country that takes pride in its safety, uniformity and order.

Provided you use your common sense, keep your personal items close and don’t drink half a bottle of sake on a night out, your trip should be trouble-free.

First-time visitors to Japan shouldn’t miss Kyoto, Japan’s cultural and spiritual heart. Spend a minimum of three days in Kyoto to scratch the surface of its 1,600 Buddhist temples, 400 Shinto shrines and atmospheric geisha district. From the eerie tranquility of the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove to temple hopping along the famed Path of Philosophy, there’s something for every type of traveler. And, if you are up for it, you can even pretend that you are a geisha for the day, walking around Kyoto in their distinctive dress and make up (a very popular thing to do in Kyoto!).

If you are visiting Kyoto for the first time, for ease of transport links, base yourself near its main train station. Located within the railway station, Hotel Granvia is highly recommended.

Jordan

Jordan is a fascinating country whose warm locals and delicious cuisine make it a must-visit. The friendliness of locals and their willingness to assist you even if you haven’t yet asked for their help make Jordan an excellent stop for solo travelers, including women.

Petra, the archaeological site of a flourishing ancient city, is by far the most incredible sight in Jordan. Nature and human works blend into one as buildings in Petra have been carved into the red sandstone over 2,000 years ago. Archaeologists believe only 15% of the ancient city has been uncovered. Nevertheless, it takes at least a full day to visit Petra because the site spans over 264 sq. km!

Ad Deir, better known as “the monastery”, is the most imposing monument on site. It takes around 900 steps to get to it so make sure you begin your ascend allowing enough time to go back to the main entrance before sunset.

Don’t miss a visit to the Dead Sea, which is technically a lake. Its high salt content makes the dip exceptional. Keep water away from your eyes because it’d sting 10 times more than the ocean. Literally, it’s 9.6 times more saline! The water is so dense it feels like you’re swimming through oil.

If you’re visiting Jordan’s capital—Amman, the safest place to stay is the artistic district Jabal L’weibdeh. It’s full of cute restaurants and cafes, and some gorgeous Airbnb apartments.

Montenegro

Montenegro, one of the gems of the Balkans, is a perfect destination for solo female travelers. You will find there beautiful scenery, interesting history and plenty of attractions for each taste but what’s most important – Montenegro is a really safe place to visit.

Sure, some annoying situation with unwanted attention can occur there (like everywhere else) and you should use your common sense and intuition (like everywhere else) but altogether Montenegro is one of the safest countries to visit in the region.

Locals are very hospitable, kind, and welcoming and will definitely help you any way they can. Since Montenegro gains popularity among tourists, the infrastructure is also getting better and there is nothing really to worry about when visiting Montenegro. Even driving around if just fine, unusually for the Balkans – the roads are good and the drivers follow the rules.

If you would like to enjoy the nightlife and a seaside vibe base yourself in Budva – the might party destination on the coast. However, if you are looking for a calmer yet insanely beautiful place to stay in then the Bay of Kotor should be your choice. You can explore the rest of the country from either of these places.

Netherlands

One of the safest countries to visit for women traveling alone is the Netherlands. The most famous place to visit in the Netherlands is Amsterdam, but there are many other interesting places in the country. There is a lot to do in the Netherland that is great for solo travel and traveling is easy, which makes a solo trip much more relaxed.

As a solo traveler, you will definitely feel safe in the Netherlands. The country has been ranked as one of the safest countries in the world and there is a very low crime rate. Furthermore, most of the people in the Netherlands speak English well. This makes communication very easy and it’s always easy to get help.

One of the best things to do as a solo traveler in the Netherlands is doing a free walking tour in Amsterdam. During such a tour you walk through the city center and, together with others, you’ll learn about the city and see the highlights. Also, you’ll walk by some of the most Instagrammable places in Amsterdam.

Another great solo activity is walking through Keukenhof. At Keukenhof, you find a beautiful garden with lots of tulips that are arranged in a particular way. It is a great place to relax and come to oneself. Besides that, visiting the museums of Amsterdam is another thing to do alone in Amsterdam that you should not miss out on! Also, a good and cheap place to stay as a solo traveler is The Flying Pig Downtown Hostel.

New Zealand

New Zealand is one of the safest countries to visit in the world, so women should not feel fear exploring everything that Aotearoa has to offer. Ranked as one of the least corrupt countries in the world and with low crime rates, it is not only a great place to live but travel too.

Classic kiwi values include fair play, sportsmanship, honesty and integrity, so it is uncommon for women to be harassed or bothered. Tourists are welcomed and New Zealanders are often keen to show off their neck of the woods.

If you wish to travel as a solo tourist, but in a group, then there are many bus tours around the country, however public transport is not extensive everywhere. Many tourist attractions are found in remote locations so travelers often rent a car for more freedom.

Why not take a New Zealand South Island road trip to see the adventure town of Queenstown? Tackle the highest bungy jump in the country and visit Milford Sound, a dramatic mountainous fjord where you cruise to the ocean. For the best cultural highlights, head to the town of Rotorua.

Hostels typically have women-only dorm rooms, but consider a classic kiwi farm stay experience with some pure New Zealand hospitality. Highlands Farm Stay Twizel is a cute accommodation where you can hand feed animals in the most beautiful location.

Norway is frequently regarded as one of the safest countries to visit in the world, and its capital, Oslo shines as a solo travel destination in Europe. Norwegians are really friendly people and the city is extremely safe to walk around. The crime rate is super low and it’s been repeatedly voted one of the happiest cities in Europe by both travelers and locals.

If you’re planning a trip to Norway, 3 or 2 days in Oslo should be plenty to explore a lot of the city’s major sights. It’s also a great hub to plan a trip around the rest of Norway and explore the spectacular landscapes of Trondheim or Bergen.

Whilst you’re in Oslo, make sure to visit the Oslo Opera House. Designed with an iceberg as its inspiration, it literally looks like it’s rising up out of the ocean and the white exterior glinting in the sun is truly beautiful. Climb the roof for panoramic views across the Oslofjord.

A few other must-sees in the city are the Akershus Fortress, the Holmenkollbakken Ski Jump and Museum, see the sculptures at Vigeland Park and the fabulous Norsk Folkemuseum. Climb to the viewpoint in Ekeberg Park for spectacular views across the city and make sure to visit the waterside neighborhood of Aker Brygge, where you’ll find delicious restaurants and a few trendy museums.

Portugal is an amazing country to visit as a solo female traveler. For several years it’s been listed as one of the safest countries in the world. With the sandy beaches of the Algarve, vibrant city life of Lisbon and Porto and the unspoiled beauty of the Azores, Portugal has something to offer everyone. Portuguese people and their hospitality make you feel at home instantly. Even if you don’t speak Portuguese it’s quite easy to communicate with locals using English.

There are many amazing things to do in Portugal from sightseeing and visiting local markets to surfing and hiking. There are a wide range of walking routes across the country including the Portuguese Camino de Santiago. Many solo female travelers walk it every year. It’s a wonderful and safe way to explore this beautiful country and to meet like-minded people from all over the world.

Visiting Portugal’s south is best done out of peak season (July and August) when local beaches get overcrowded and accommodation prices increase significantly. May and June are much better; the weather is nice and warm and there are not too many tourists.

There are many great hostels throughout Portugal that offer group tours for their guests. You can do fun things and meet new people. Yes! Lisbon Hostel in Lisbon is one of the best places to stay for solo travelers – a great vibe, fun activities, communal dinners, and regular pub crawls.

Romania is the perfect destination for female solo travelers looking for a safe and accommodating country!  Romania is a highly underrated country with plenty to offer for everyone, regardless of their travel preferences.

If mountains, castles, and outdoor activities are your thing, look no further than Transylvania.  If you prefer some cocktails on the beach, the Black Sea coast is where you’ll want to go.  For the painted monasteries and wooden churches, head to northern Romania in Maramureș and Bucovina.  You can even visit Europe’s most famous and protected wetland area, the Danube Delta.

Romania’s most popular cities to visit include Brașov, Sibiu, Cluj-Napoca, Timișoara, and of course its capital city, Bucharest.  In most cities, you can rent an entire apartment on Airbnb for around 500 USD for one month.  If you are planning a shorter stay, hostels are abundant – check out Hotel Transilvania in Cluj-Napoca!

Romania has very little violence or petty crimes, and its residents are among the friendliest and most helpful in Europe.  You will feel safe walking around cities alone at night or meeting up with new friends.

Definitely meet some locals!  Romanians are very proud and very curious to figure out why you’re visiting their country!  They are also very eager to practice their English (or help you with your Romanian!).

Thailand

Krabi, Thailand - safe countries to visit in the world

Thailand is without a doubt one of the safest countries in Asia for women to travel solo in. The country is thriving on tourism, and it’s a popular backpacker destination for solo travelers around the globe.

It’s unlikely that you will feel unsafe and lonely when travelling in Thailand because you can always find other solo travelers to hang out with.

Thailand is a very easy country to navigate in. Going from A to B is a piece of cake. If you have several transfers before your end destination, you’ll get a sticker slapped on your chest and you just follow the herd of stickers. It’s almost impossible to get lost while travelling in Thailand!

Furthermore, the Thai people are also very friendly of nature, and they will help you if ask them.

There are so many great things to see and do in Thailand. You’ll most likely begin your journey in Bangkok where you can eat delicious street food and explore some incredible temples such as Wat Pho, Wat Arun or the Golden Mount Temple. Afterwards, you can move on to explore Thailand’s exotic islands or the beautiful national parks inland.

The best tip for women who are travelling solo in Thailand is to stay in a hostel rather than a luxury hotel. In hostels, guesthouses, and homestays you’ll often meet like-minded solo travelers to befriend. You can easily find hostels on Booking.com or Hostelworld.

Getting to Uzbekistan was once a bureaucratic hassle, but with its new visa free regime it is now easier than ever to visit the country. With its Silk road cities and beautiful Islamic architecture there are many reasons to do so. However, as a Muslim country in central Asia you might wonder how safe it is for solo female travelers.

Solo female travel in Uzbekistan is much safer than you might think. First of all, Uzbekistan has low crime rates and the government is investing a lot in tourism infrastructure to ensure the safety of travelers. Second, despite being a Muslim country, attitudes towards women are fairly liberal. Although dressing modestly will be appreciated there is no need to cover up like in some other Muslim countries in Asia.

Uzbek people are very friendly and with the Uzbek hospitality it is not hard to feel welcome in the country. It is also very easy to travel around. Uzbekistan has modern high speed trains that are a cheap, comfortable and safe way for solo female travelers to travel between cities.

The Silk road cities of Samarkand, Khiva and Bukhara are the country’s most beautiful with lots of ancient mosques, madrassas, hamams and caravanserais. The bustling bazaars are a journey back in time. You will also have enough choice in accommodation option, from cheap hostels where it’s easy to meet other travelers, to small scale homestays with local Uzbek people.

Taking the leap as a solo traveler can be difficult. But it’s something that’s incredibly empowering and I definitely recommend doing it at least once. Even if you don’t go far, a solo trip is worth it.

  12. An interesting post and I would probably agree with most of them. To be honest I have had so few episodes if feeling unsafe in any of the 72 countries I have visited. Like the article advises – just wary and aware and you should be fine. Great to read your perspectives on these countries. I read that little Liechtenstein officially has one of, if not the, lowest crime rates in the world. It certainly felt it when I was in the capital Vaduz. Glad to see Uzbekistan on your list as I so want to go there and this is defo an encouragement for me. Thanks
