Paris is definitely one of my favorite cities. I could go here over and over again. Actually I already have. But I’m always looking for new things to do. Something a little bit out of the ordinary. Sure, there are the popular tourist attractions and activities. And they’re all worth doing. But you might also want to leave the mainstream ideas to one side every now and again and try something new. Here’s a good mix of my top things to do in and around Paris.
Paris Museums
- The Louvre, the classic Paris museum for art lovers who don’t mind battling the crowds
- Musée d’Orsay, smaller and quieter than the Louvre but just as unique a building, and my favorite museum in Paris. Find out why here
- Musée de Vin – exactly as it sounds, learn all about wine and even get some tastings
- Visit the quirky museum with artworks by Spanish surrealist, Salvador Dali, at Dali Paris in Montmartre
- While in the arty bohemian neighborhood, visit the Musée de Montmartre
- Musée de l’Orangerie near the Louvre is another great museum if your art fix isn’t yet complete
- Take in a piece of history at the Curie Museum, in Marie Curie’s old laboratory
- The incredibly unique Musée des Vampires will have you reaching for the garlic and a cross
- Rodin Museum – amazing artwork by the famed sculptor
- Create ridiculous Instagram posts at the Museum of Illusions
Paris Outdoor Spaces

Historical Sites of Paris
- Descend into the eerie human-remains filled Catacombs of Paris
- Marvel at the Sacre-Coeur in Montmartre and attempt the hill to look down on it
- While you’re in Montmartre, why not take a walk around the beautiful but creepy Montmartre cemetery – try and spot famous ballet star Nijinsky’s interesting grave
- Take in the recently damaged, but still mightily impressive Notre-Dame Cathedral
- Trace the old Bastille fortress of Paris – no longer standing but there are remains around Boulevard Henri IV where it meets with Quai de Celestins
- Explore the Palace of Versailles, former Royal residence about an hour by transit from Paris center
- On a history mission? Take a French Revolution walking tour around the sites of the capital
- Visit the beautiful Sainte-Chapelle on the Île de la Cité near Notre Dame
- Panthéon Paris – this temple is now the resting place of many great French figures like Victor Hugo and Marie Curie
- Pay respects at the Princess Diana Memorial at the Pont de Alma where she died. The unofficial memorial is the Flame of Liberty there.

- See if you can book tickets to a ballet performance at the gorgeous Palais Garnier during your visit
- Book yourself a Paris location photo shoot with a local photographer (cheaper than you’d think)
Kid Friendly Paris
- The ultimate kid friendly activity has to be Disneyland Paris but it is just outside of the city so you may want to plan to stay out there for at least one night
- Visit the Aquarium de Paris which is conveniently close to the Eiffel Tower
- Zip around the streets of Paris with an electric scooter rental – Lime is a local bike and scooter sharing app that you can use while there

Day Trips From Paris
- Giverny – picturesque village famous for Claude Monet’s house and gardens.
- Versailles – Visit the former royal residence but also the cute little town where it’s located.
- Auvers-Sur-Oise – small town with link to many famous painters including Van Gogh. Also the absinthe museum.

- Champagne – the region famous for it’s sparkling alcoholic drink of the same name
- Bayeux – Town in Normandy famed for the tapestry depicting 1066 English invasion, as well as near to the beaches of Normandy
- Amiens – I loved this small city with its cathedral and markets
- Fontainebleau – just outside of Paris this area has a beautiful castle and is surrounded by the Fontainebleau forest
- Chantilly – like the cream? You bet. Take in the historical sites, but don’t forget to savor some delicious desserts complete with Chantilly whipped cream
- Luxembourg – That’s right, you can do an international day trip to Luxembourg City. I found the train really quick and comfortable, only just over 2 hours
Top Things to Do in The City of Light
Well if that isn’t enough to keep you busy on at least a dozen trips to Paris I don’t know what will. Don’t be afraid to try out some public transit or rent a bike. Don’t limit yourself to a couple of blocks around the main tourist sites, make sure to explore. Plan your trip wisely because although the city isn’t huge, sometimes the things you want to see are far enough apart. I’ve spent hours walking from the Louvre to the Eiffel Tower and regretting it (or my feet did). Group your activities together based on where they are. Make use of the maps of Paris and the arrondissement guides.

I love the inclusion of day trip ideas. Sometimes I get a little sick of being in the same city and I love it more when I come back! That’s how I felt about Rome! 🙂
That is the thing about Paris – ALWAYS something to do! I have been 50+ times, go every year and never run out of my “to see” list it is always growing! This is an excellent set to start with, fantastic job!
I love how extensive this list is! I’ve mentioned a few times in various places how much I didn’t like Paris because I had such a bad experience, but I really want to give it a second chance. I’d love to do some of these more unique things like the sidecar!
Also, was it just me or did you see people NOT dressed up at Moulin Rouge, but they were let in anyway?!
Such an awesome all inclusive post!! I am really hoping to do Paris next year! Making it my goal to check off all these! I’m already dreaming of the crepes, YUM!
What a comprehensive list, and Paris is my favorite city too! Definitely saving this post for when I go back. I’ll have some quick guidance of the best things to do at my fingertips. And I love that you included day trips as a category too. I didn’t really branch out to nearby cities/towns when I was there, but I’d love to do that next time!
Wow, what an extensive list! This is a great resource for anyone wanting to visit Paris and it surrounds. Thank you.
I visited Paris once and it felt like such a dream! There’s so much I missed (since I was with my high school group), but hey that gives me incentive to go back and tick everything off this list!
What a fabulously curated list and I agree with you Emma that there is so so much to do in Paris. I had taken a trip there and stayed 8 days which were just not enough 🙂
Love Paris! What a nice way to round up so many things to do. I looked at the cheese and the macaroons and thought, I love how the French eat all that and stay so thin! 🙂 Bayeux is another favorite, one of my host families is near there. Great post!
Wow there are so many great things to do in the city of Love! I’m a bit embarrassed to say that I still haven’t made it there yet …
This list will be so useful for my first trip there tho!
I loved this post, Paris will always be one of my all-time favorite cities. I can’t wait to get back to check out some of these things I’ve missed. Thanks for sharing!
I’ve been to Paris a couple of times but missed out a lot of your suggestions – thanks for the amazing tips!

Man, I miss Paris! It’s such a beautiful and enigmatic city, it’s also a lot more laid back than ones like NYC or London. I would absolutely go back there, and this post is making me wanna book that flight ASAP!
What a great list. I love visiting Paris, and especially have enjoyed my own road trips out to Giverny and Champagne.
Well done for this list. We can easily spend 2 weeks there with so many tips. Very good idea to organise by thematics.
